South Korea announced that North Korea possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads.
Modern.az reports that South Korean Defense Minister An Gyu Bak provided this information during his speech in parliament.
The minister stated that it is difficult to determine the exact number of nuclear warheads North Korea possesses.
An Gyu Bak later clarified his statement, saying that the figure he cited was based on assessments by private research organizations. According to him, the South Korean Armed Forces cannot officially confirm this figure.
The estimate of 80-120 nuclear warheads announced by the minister is approximately twice the figure cited by US President Donald Trump a day earlier.
While discussing his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the White House, Trump had stated that Pyongyang possessed 57 “very powerful nuclear warheads.”
When the South Korean defense minister was asked to comment on Trump's statement, he responded diplomatically:
“It seems the numbers differ somewhat.”
Thus, the assessment announced by Seoul indicates that North Korea's nuclear arsenal may be significantly larger than the figure cited by Trump.
It should be noted that the figure of 80-120 nuclear warheads is not officially confirmed data, but an assessment by private research organizations cited by South Korea.
