Armenia has not been paying its membership fees to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) for a long time, and the application of measures stipulated in the organization's charter in this regard is being discussed.
Modern.az reports that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated this in a statement to journalists.
“What should be done in this situation? We discussed this issue today. Armenia has a debt to the CSTO budget that has accumulated for more than two years. This case is stipulated in the charter of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Today we agreed to consider the possibilities of applying the relevant article,” Lavrov said.
It should be noted that according to Article 20 of the CSTO Charter, if a member state does not pay its debt to the organization's budget within two years, the Collective Security Council may decide to suspend the right of citizens of that country to be nominated for quota-based positions in the organization, as well as to deprive them of voting rights until the debt is fully paid.
In addition, the article states that if a member state fails to comply with the provisions of the Charter, as well as the decisions of the Collective Security Council and other bodies of the organization, its participation in the organization's activities may be suspended or its membership terminated.
Such decisions are made without taking into account the vote of that state.
