The US has opened the way for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, and the visit of President Donald Trump's special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is confirmation of this.
Modern.az reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this in a conversation with journalists.
According to Zelensky, during the meeting with US representatives, the issue of providing Ukraine with missiles for air defense systems was also discussed.
“They listened in detail to what we need and for how long. I expect to meet with President Trump around the 20th and discuss this issue. God willing, there will be a result. In addition, in my opinion, we are moving towards a trilateral format. I cannot disclose all the details here. We agreed with the American side to first prepare all this, and then inform the public,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian President emphasized that one of the main features of the meeting was that US representatives visited both Kyiv and Moscow.
According to him, this is not only a signal of political support, but also shows that Ukraine's position on the battlefield and its capabilities in negotiations have strengthened.
“The American side also says this. Their military and analysts also admit this. This is a fact. We are getting stronger on the battlefield from the end of 2025. Russia's losses are many, and its achievements are few. The general position is approximately like this,” Zelensky noted.
The President also stated that it was important for the American representatives to see the consequences of Russia's strikes on the capital during their visit to Kyiv.
Zelensky said that grain and energy issues were also discussed at the meeting. He emphasized that these issues are sensitive for both Ukraine and Russia, as well as for the world.
“We are ready to find a compromise here. But it is very important that we are currently in a situation where both Ukraine and Russia must take certain steps. One cannot expect compromise only from Ukraine. A lot has already been done in terms of compromise,” the Ukrainian leader said.
