Tomorrow, a crucial referendum on limiting the population will be held in Switzerland.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that the project called "Switzerland with no more than 10 million inhabitants! / Sustainability Initiative", put forward by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), one of the country's largest political forces, aims to determine the demographic future of the republic.
Currently, the country's population is approximately 9.1 million people. SVP representatives note that since 2002, when the agreement on free movement with the European Union came into force, the population has increased by 1.7 million people as a result of migration flows. The main point of the initiative is that if the population reaches 9.5 million, the government and parliament must take urgent measures to reduce migration. These measures primarily include tightening asylum rights and family reunification rules.
The initiative aims to keep the number of permanent residents in the country below the 10 million mark by 2050.
