The German Football Association (DFB) announced that the national team's head coach Julian Nagelsmann has resigned from his position.
Modern.az reports, citing German media, that the decision was made after the German national team was unexpectedly eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the round of 16, losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout.
Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association, thanked Nagelsmann for his services in a statement.
"The German Football Association expresses its gratitude to Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023. He is a specialist distinguished by his high professionalism, great ambition, responsible and sincere character," the statement noted.
The statement also said that the DFB leadership will begin negotiations with Jürgen Klopp regarding the appointment of a new head coach.
According to information, Klopp has, in principle, agreed to coach the German national team. He currently serves as the Head of Global Football Projects at Red Bull Group. However, his contract includes a special clause that allows him to leave his position if he receives an offer from the German national team.
If Klopp's leadership of the German national team materializes, it will be his first coaching job after leaving "Liverpool FC" in 2024.
It should be recalled that the 38-year-old Nagelsmann was appointed head coach of the German national team in September 2023. He led the team to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024, where Germany lost to Spain, who later became the tournament winners.
The German national team defeated Curaçao 7:1 in their first group stage match of the 2026 World Cup, then beat Ivory Coast 2:1. Despite losing 1:2 to Ecuador, they advanced to the playoffs as group leaders due to goal difference. The team lost in a penalty shootout in the round of 16 against Paraguay, with the main and extra time ending 1:1.
After the defeat, Nagelsmann commented on his resignation decision:
"I am not a person who shies away from responsibility. But today's result showed that there are things that need to change."
