Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has appointed Erlan Karin, who has served as his chief advisor for many years, as vice president.
Modern.az reports with reference to Reuters that this position was created based on the new Constitution adopted in the country this year.
Erlan Karin, 50, has served as Tokayev's chief advisor since 2019. He previously worked in the field of combating terrorism.
The Supreme Court of Kazakhstan has ruled that Tokayev, 73, can run for another 7-year presidential term under the new Constitution. Tokayev's current presidential term ends in 2029.
Tokayev also proposed the reappointment of Oljas Bektenov as prime minister. Bektenov has been leading the government of Kazakhstan since 2024. Both appointments have been approved by the country's parliament.
