The European Parliament is preparing to summon FIFA President Gianni Infantino for hearings regarding a controversial plan to attract private investments to the organization's competitions.

Modern.az reports that Euronews has released information on this matter.

According to the information, Infantino will have to answer questions from members of the European Parliament directly. It is stated that this step is being taken in accordance with FIFA's stated principles of transparency and democratic accountability.

According to the controversial plan, a new company will be established for the organization of FIFA competitions, and up to 20 percent of its shares will be sold to external investors. Among the potential investors is American businessman Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

FIFA, however, states that all national football associations should have the opportunity to discuss this plan within the framework of open and democratic consultations. The organization has not accepted the calls from UEFA and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) to suspend the project.

Political groups in the European Parliament have expressed serious concerns about the project, accusing Gianni Infantino of unsatisfactory management of FIFA.

MEPs are concerned both about the lack of sufficient consultations on the plan and the announcement of the project ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential elections. Gianni Infantino has already announced that he will be a candidate for re-election for the next term.
