The restoration of Azerbaijan's state sovereignty has opened new opportunities for ensuring lasting peace.
Modern.az reports that this was stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan on the occasion of September 20 - State Sovereignty Day.
It was noted that September 20 is a historic day when our state sovereignty was established, written in golden letters in the centuries-old chronicle of our people's statehood:
"On September 19-20, 2023, local anti-terrorist measures were carried out in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan with the aim of disarming the remnants of the Armenian armed forces and removing them from the territory of our country. Thus, as a result of the measures completed in less than 24 hours, state sovereignty over our territories was ensured.
The resolute political will and leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, and the high professionalism, valor, and heroism of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces played a decisive role in achieving this historic victory.
During the anti-terrorist measures, the Azerbaijani side paid special attention to the safety of the civilian population, targeting only legitimate military objects and infrastructures of illegal armed groups, not civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The restoration of Azerbaijan's state sovereignty has created a new political reality in the region, opening new opportunities for the normalization of Azerbaijan-Armenia relations and the establishment of lasting peace. Our country has demonstrated its commitment to the peace agenda by taking consistent and purposeful steps towards the normalization of relations.
The historic meeting held in Washington on August 8, 2025, with the participation of the leaders of Azerbaijan, the United States of America, and Armenia, was an important stage in the peace and normalization process.
Today, the agreements reached during the meetings of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia are of great importance not only for ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region but also for realizing the regional economic potential.
The restoration of economic and trade relations in the region and the implementation of confidence-building measures in this direction, as well as the promotion of regional integration of international transport and logistics routes, will create new economic dividends and cooperation opportunities not only for Azerbaijan and Armenia but also for all interested parties.
Arising from the historical peace opportunity, solving the issues ahead for the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the full normalization of relations is of great importance.
Today, Azerbaijan is carrying out large-scale work towards the restoration of liberated territories, ensuring the return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands, and the sustainable development of those territories. At the same time, eliminating the mine threat and determining the fate of missing persons are among our country's main priorities.
State Sovereignty Day is a symbol of the Azerbaijani people's commitment to their statehood, national will, and territorial integrity. This significant day is an important occasion to deeply respect the dear memory of our martyrs, to always protect the value of the historic Victory achieved at the cost of their lives, and to pass it on to future generations.
The state sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan is eternal, indivisible, and inviolable.
