US command has ordered the commander and officers of the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division to deploy to the Middle East.
Modern.az reports, citing Fox News, that Major General Brandon Tegtmeier, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, and his command staff have been ordered to deploy to the Middle East.
"The Pentagon and the White House are currently considering the possibility of deploying the entire division to the region for ground operations."
The channel notes that information had previously been circulated about US plans to use ground units to seize Iran's Kharg Island or conduct other operations within Iran. Meanwhile, a US Navy amphibious assault group with a marine expeditionary battalion on board is heading towards the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, the group will need several more days to reach the strait.
The mission of the Marines may include the task of taking control of Iranian islands or territories along the Persian Gulf coast.
It should be recalled that the 82nd Airborne Division (Fort Liberty, North Carolina) is one of the most elite and combat-ready units of the US Army, specializing in parachute assaults and peacekeeping operations. Established in 1917, the division is remembered for a series of successful airborne operations during World War II.
