Azerbaijanis arrested for ship accident that killed 8 people

Nine of the 14 suspects brought to court in connection with the ship tragedy near Girne, Northern Cyprus, have been remanded in custody for 3 days.

Modern.az reports, citing Turkish media, that among those arrested are Azerbaijani citizens Valeh Hummatov and Rashad Ibrahimov.

It is reported that the passenger ship named “Filo Jet” sank shortly after departing from Girne port towards Taşucu. It was announced that there were 267 people on board, 241 people were rescued, 8 people died, and 18 people are missing.

The court investigated claims regarding the technical condition of the ship, the actions of the captain and crew, as well as the evacuation of passengers. Authorities stated that the investigation to determine the causes of the accident is ongoing. A 3-day mourning period has been declared in Northern Cyprus in connection with the incident.

The investigation will determine whether the accident was caused by technical malfunction, negligence, or other reasons.
