US President Donald Trump is likely to be among the nominees for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
Modern.az reports that Kristian Berg Harpviken, secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told Reuters. According to him, 287 candidates have been nominated for the award this year - 208 individuals and 79 organizations, and there are many new names compared to last year.
Leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan had previously announced that they had nominated Trump for the award. If this is true, the nominations were submitted in the spring and summer of 2025 and are therefore considered valid - the deadline for applications was January 31. Reuters notes that these claims cannot be verified because the list of candidates is kept confidential.
Trump himself has repeatedly stated that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. He claimed to have stopped at least 8 wars after taking office in 2025. In January of this year, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado symbolically presented her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump during a meeting at the White House (the award organizers said that the award belonged only to Machado).
However, in March, Trump said his interest in the topic had waned.
"I'm not interested in that anymore," he said when asked about the prospect of receiving the award. The US president also admitted that he does not know how the conflict with Iran will affect his chances of receiving the award in the future.
