The US administration is preparing to pay Liberia $5 million as part of an agreement to accept deported migrants.
According to the information, the State Department approved the payment back in December of last year. Two months prior, Liberia had promised the US that it would consider the possibility of accepting migrants deported from other countries.
The Liberian authorities also provided assurances that migrants sent from the US would not be persecuted based on their race or religious affiliation. The US State Department considered these assurances credible.
The $5 million in funds is reportedly intended to support Liberia's migration system and provide assistance to individuals sent to the country. These funds are expected to cover expenses such as migrant housing, food, and vocational training.
According to the publication, the administration of US President Donald Trump is reaching similar agreements with various states to send migrants who cannot be directly deported to their home countries to third countries.
This policy has drawn criticism from human rights organizations. They state that sending migrants to countries with which they have no ties, especially in states with existing human rights problems, can create risks.
The Liberian authorities announced this week that they are prepared to accept up to 1,200 deported migrants from the US over the next year. The first group of migrants arrived in the country's capital, Monrovia, on August 20.
The US administration had previously reached an agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo regarding the acceptance of third-country nationals. As part of that agreement, the first group of deportees, consisting of citizens from Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador, was sent to Kinshasa on April 17.
