The number of prisoners held in prisons and pre-trial detention centers in Russia has sharply decreased in recent years.

Modern.az reports that Arkady Gostev, director of Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN), announced this.

According to him, compared to the end of 2021, the number of prisoners in the country has decreased by approximately 1.5 times. If at the end of 2021, 465,000 people were held in Russian correctional facilities and pre-trial detention centers, this number has now decreased to 282,000.

Among the reasons for the decrease, the head of the FSIN also noted "the work carried out in the direction of selecting candidates for contract military service." This statement is considered the first indirect confirmation at the level of the penitentiary system leadership in Russia of the practice of sending prisoners to war.
