Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a remarkable statement regarding the naming of cognac produced in the country.
Modern.az reports that Pashinyan spoke about this today during the discussion of the government's program for the next five years in the Armenian parliament.
The Prime Minister stated that, according to international standards, "cognac" specifically refers to a drink produced from local grapes in a certain region of France:
"In this regard, the issue of naming the alcoholic beverage produced in Armenia as "cognac" should be reconsidered. It is important to create modern laboratories in the country to control the quality of products. However, in his opinion, laboratories are not needed to solve some issues. There is no such laboratory in the world that would give an opinion on our alcoholic beverage and confirm that it is cognac. Because "cognac" means an alcoholic beverage produced from local grapes in the relevant region of France."
The Armenian Prime Minister also said that the issue of refusing the name "cognac" caused serious discussions in the country:
"So, should we give up this name or not? When I discuss this in the government, opposition circles start saying that the government allegedly wants to give up another national treasure. I don't understand this. If the opposition agrees, we can prepare a bill prohibiting the use of the word "cognac" for the relevant Armenian alcoholic beverage."
