The Kremlin has issued a statement regarding Armenia's withdrawal from the CSTO and its intention to join the EU.
Modern.az reports that Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Armenia can make its own decision to withdraw from the CSTO.
Peskov noted that if Armenia believes it no longer needs CSTO membership, it is free to decide to leave the organization.
“If Armenia no longer needs membership in the CSTO, then it can make the relevant decision and withdraw from the organization,” Peskov said.
Commenting on Armenia's intention to start the process of applying for membership in the European Union, the Kremlin spokesman recalled Turkey's experience.
Peskov noted that Turkey's application for EU membership has remained without result for many years.
Thus, while the Kremlin did not directly object to Yerevan's possible withdrawal from the CSTO, it demonstrated skepticism about the swift realization of Armenia's EU integration plans.
