Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov commented on the current state of relations between Moscow and Yerevan and the upcoming Eurasian Economic Union summit in Kazakhstan.

Modern.az reports that Lavrov called Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's decision not to attend the meeting of Union leaders at the end of May "sad." The minister stated that the summit was a good opportunity to discuss unresolved issues.

Pashinyan had previously said he would not be able to attend the event due to an intense election campaign.

The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized that if Armenia chooses the path of joining the European Union, it will not be able to fulfill its obligations within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union. According to him, these two integration paths are not compatible with each other.

Yerevan may lose economic and investment advantages within the alliance. Lavrov accused the West of trying to sever Armenia's ties with its CIS partners and implement "aggressive Russophobia."

The minister called the relations between the two sides "close, but complex" and noted that Moscow considers it its duty to explain to its ally the risks of changing its foreign policy course.
