US President Donald Trump said in an interview with "Pod Force One" on Wednesday that he wants to meet Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Modern.az reports that "New York Post" published this information.
56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen in public since he was injured in US-Israeli coalition airstrikes on February 28. In this attack, his father, Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and other family members were killed.
Trump said that Mojtaba Khamenei is indirectly involved in negotiations with the US.
"Yes, I think he is highly respected in Iran," Trump said about Khamenei's son.
According to him, Mojtaba Khamenei's hiding has caused peace talks to be prolonged by a process of mail deliveries lasting for days.
"I haven't had the honor of meeting him yet... If you believe the stories circulating, then he is missing many different 'parts'," Donald Trump told journalist Miranda Devine.
"They say he gives the final approval on decisions made, because that's how it's been in Iran for a very long time. First his father, and now him - I guess it's the transfer of power through succession. But it seems we are building quite good relations with Iran."
Answering a question about a possible meeting, Donald Trump told journalist Miranda Devine:
"Yes, I would like to meet him. I would very much like to meet everyone. We will probably meet sometime, depending on how everything develops."
Trump has demonstrated an unconventional approach, supporting direct and face-to-face contacts with leaders of countries considered rivals of the US. He believes that such an approach, which breaks diplomatic traditions, can help build personal relationships and ultimately increase the country's security.
A memorandum of understanding to be signed between the US and Iran could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as early as this week, which would alleviate energy supply problems that have led to rising gasoline prices and inflation.
However, there have been several false starts in this process. This is partly due to claims of Iran changing its position, as well as the days-long courier communication system the country uses to avoid the risk of a possible assassination attempt against its Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
Donald Trump, however, stated that he is not in a hurry on this matter.
