Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has announced that no future elections will be held in the country.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that the president made this statement at an event dedicated to the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution on July 20.
Ortega stated that the goal is to prevent the opposition from seizing power. According to him, new laws will be adopted with the parliament controlled by the ruling party against those he called "enemies of the country, conspirators and traitors".
Although the next presidential elections in Nicaragua are planned for 2027, Ortega did not specify whether the elections would be completely canceled or simply the participation of the opposition would be restricted.
It should be noted that on the eve of the 2021 presidential elections, the Nicaraguan authorities banned the activities of a number of opposition parties and arrested most of the presidential candidates before the vote.
In 2025, at Ortega's initiative, the presidential term was increased from 5 to 6 years with an amendment to the Constitution. At the same time, Rosario Murillo, who is also the vice-president and his wife, was declared the co-president of the country.
During his speech, Daniel Ortega also criticized the United States. He accused Washington of campaigning to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro earlier this year and blamed the opposition for organizing the protests that took place in the country in 2018.
