US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50 percent customs duty on a wide range of products imported from Canada.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that the decision was made in response to Canada's "unequal treatment" against US-made cars, dairy products and alcoholic beverages.
New tariffs cover everyday consumer goods such as wine, hockey sticks, as well as industrial products such as cement. However, Canada's main export products such as energy carriers, potash, critical minerals and fish products are exempt from the new tariffs. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country is ready to intensify trade talks with the US in the coming weeks.
The White House announced that the new customs duties will come into force after 30 days. The decision is considered a significant increase in trade tension between the two neighboring North American countries. Tensions in trade relations between the US and Canada have deepened after Donald Trump returned to the presidency in January 2025 and implemented a broad tariff policy globally.
Customs tariffs are taxes applied to products imported from abroad, and these taxes are paid to the state budget by companies that bring the products into the country.
It should be noted that the US Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that a number of tariffs imposed by Trump globally based on emergency powers were illegally adopted. However, the recent decision against Canada was made based on a different legal mechanism that has not yet been tested in courts.
Canada is one of the closest trading partners of the US, and last year it was one of the few countries that took retaliatory measures against the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
