Iran and Oman are close to finalizing a draft agreement on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. The document would give Tehran control over ships entering the Persian Gulf, but would not provide for customs duties or service fees to be collected from them.
Modern.az reports that "The Wall Street Journal" (WSJ) newspaper published this information, citing sources.
According to the information, the main provisions of the draft agreement have already been agreed upon, and the document has been submitted to the US, countries in the region, as well as Iran's supreme leadership. However, the final approval of the Iranian leadership is required for the project to enter into force.
According to the project, ships entering the Persian Gulf will move along a specified route along the Iranian coast, while ships leaving the Gulf will use a route passing through Omani waters.
However, the publication notes that the signing of the agreement is still in question and negotiations may fail.
It should be recalled that earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai announced that the geographical coordinates of a new route for the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman had been agreed upon.
