The new head coach of the Romanian national football team has been determined.
Modern.az reports that after Mircea Lucescu, the legendary footballer Gheorghe Hagi was brought to the helm of the team. This was announced during a live broadcast on the official social media account of the Romanian Football Federation.
Speaking at the press conference held after the appointment, Hagi stated that it is a great honor for him to represent the national team again:
“It is a great pride for me to represent Romania again. I have done it successfully as a player, and I hope that as a head coach I will be able to represent my country in the best way. The selection plays a decisive role. When forming the squad, we will keep two main criteria in the foreground. Firstly, the players must have international experience in both the main and youth national teams. Because we are competing at the European level and we need players suitable for this level. The second criterion is to build a team consisting of the strongest Romanian footballers.”
It should be noted that 61-year-old Hagi last coached the “Viitorul” club in his own country and left this position in 2025. He was also the head coach of the Romanian national team at the beginning of his coaching career – in 2001.
In addition, the Romanian specialist worked as the head coach of Turkey's "Galatasaray" club at various times. Hagi coached “Bursaspor” in 2003 and FCSB in 2007.
It should be recalled that the Romanian national team stopped fighting after being defeated in the play-off semi-finals of the European qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
