After liberation from occupation, large-scale restoration and reconstruction works are being carried out in Shusha city.
Modern.az reports that Aydin Karimov, the President's special representative for Shusha, stated this at a panel held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum.
According to him, the biggest loss of Shusha during the occupation was the damage to its cultural heritage:
“Monuments, mosques were destroyed, people were forcibly displaced from their homes. Serious damage was done to the ecological situation of the area. These destructions are one of the unprecedented events in world history as an example of the barbarism of the occupation. The destruction of the city was the result of a deliberate occupying policy.”
Aydin Karimov noted that extensive restoration works are being carried out in Shusha by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Karabakh Revival Foundation.
“As a result, 27 historical monuments and 7 mosques have been restored. This year, the Shusha State Reserve will start the conservation of 15 more historical monuments. Also, the design work of the complex of Khan's daughter Khurshidbanu Natavan will be launched,” he added.
