The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced the end of the Andes hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship "MV Hondius".
Modern.az reports that he wrote about this on the social network "X".
"Today, the quarantine period ended for the last person exposed to hantavirus on the cruise ship "MV Hondius", their test result was negative, and they returned home. No new cases have been registered since May 25. Therefore, WHO considers the virus outbreak to be over," Ghebreyesus said.
It should be noted that the Andes virus spread on board the Dutch expedition ship "MV Hondius" during a voyage across the South Atlantic in April-May 2026. There were 147 people on board the ship - 88 passengers and 59 crew members. During the hantavirus outbreak, which WHO was informed about on May 2, the organization reported 13 confirmed infections and three deaths.
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses that primarily infect small mammals but can also be transmitted to humans. In severe cases, infected individuals develop lung damage, heart failure, and hemorrhagic fever.
