Among foreign prisoners held in Georgian prisons, Azerbaijani citizens rank third in terms of numbers.
Modern.az reports with reference to the Ministry of Justice of Georgia that Turkish citizens are in the first place among foreigners serving sentences in prisons of this country. They constitute 31 percent of the total foreign prisoners.
Russian citizens are in second place with 12 percent. Azerbaijani citizens are in third place with 10 percent. Ukrainian citizens take the next place in the list with 9 percent.
According to the information, the number of foreign prisoners in Georgia has increased by more than 1.5 times in the last year, from 1082 in March 2025 to 1673 in March 2026.
Foreign prisoners constitute 14.3 percent of the total number of those serving sentences in the country. Currently, citizens of 67 countries are held in Georgian prisons.
It is reported that 536 of the foreign prisoners are awaiting court verdicts, while others are already serving their sentences.
As of April 1, one minor foreign prisoner and 168 female foreign prisoners are also held in Georgian prisons.
It should be noted that as of April 1, 2026, there are a total of 11,669 prisoners in Georgian prisons.
