The issue of Ukraine was also widely discussed at the 36th summit meeting of NATO held in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. In addition, Ukraine reached an agreement with Estonia and the Netherlands on joint UAV production. Canada will allocate 900 million in aid to Ukraine. It is interesting what Ukraine expects from this NATO meeting?
Ukrainian political scientist Stanislav Zhelikhovsky told Modern.az that Ukraine's main expectation from the Ankara NATO Summit is not the adoption of symbolic political decisions, but the provision of long-term and predictable support:
“One of the most important results of the summit is the further strengthening of defense-industrial cooperation. The agreements reached on the joint production of unmanned aerial vehicles with the Netherlands and Estonia, as well as the drone agreement signed with Denmark, show that Ukraine is no longer just a country receiving military aid, but is becoming an integral part of the European defense industry.”
The political scientist emphasized that the US still plays an irreplaceable role in intelligence, air defense and strategic deterrence:
“However, Europe is taking on increasing responsibility within NATO, and this means a more balanced sharing of the burden within the alliance, not replacing the US. Europe can provide long-term support to Ukraine as it continues to invest in the defense industry, increasing the production of ammunition, unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles and air defense systems. The war waged by Russia has convinced most European governments that support for Ukraine is no longer just a matter of solidarity. This is a matter of ensuring Europe's own security,” he said.
