Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in Moscow.

Modern.az reports that this was stated in a message from the Kremlin's press service.

According to Iran's Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, the main topics of Larijani's conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin were the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and the situation in the Middle East.

The IRIB news agency, citing the ambassador, stated that "The main focus of the talks was the expansion of bilateral relations, including economic cooperation between the two countries. At the same time, the parties discussed current regional and international issues".

Earlier, on January 16, the Russian leader discussed the situation in Iran by phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During the conversation, the parties emphasized their mutual interest in the swift de-escalation of tensions in the republic and the resolution of all related problems solely through political and diplomatic means.

Protests stemming from economic discontent in Iran began in late December last year. During the unrest, authorities restricted internet and mobile phone services. On January 16, Reuters reported, citing human rights activists and local residents, that Iranian authorities brutally suppressed the unrest.

Since the protests began, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened Tehran with military strikes in support of the demonstrators. The Kremlin called on Washington and Tehran to refrain from using force and to focus on negotiations.
