US President Donald Trump will not accept Iran's latest offer. This offer envisages the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, but postponing the nuclear program issue for later talks.
Modern.az reports that “The New York Times” newspaper reported this, citing sources familiar with the discussions held at the White House on Monday.
According to the information, Trump told his advisers that Iran's latest offer to restore the strait's operation and stop the war does not satisfy him. Also, during the meeting at the White House, it was discussed what other military operations might be needed to force Tehran to make serious concessions in the negotiations.
CNN also reports, citing sources familiar with the situation, that this plan, presented to the US in recent days, is unlikely to be accepted by Trump.
According to sources, opening the strait without resolving the enriched uranium issue could deprive the US of a key leverage in negotiations.
At the same time, the continuation of the blockade imposed on Iranian ships will prolong the increase in energy prices; this increase has already led to a sharp rise in gasoline prices in the US.
According to CNN, after Monday's meeting, Trump's next steps remain uncertain. US officials say that disagreements within the Iranian leadership are a cause for concern and they are not sure who will make the final decision on a potential agreement.
At the same time, Trump also publicly expressed skepticism about the idea of resuming bombings, which were suspended after he extended the ceasefire last week.
