British Health Minister Wes Streeting has resigned. Claims that he could be a candidate for Keir Starmer's leadership are also on the agenda.
Modern.az reports that Streeting stated in his resignation letter that he had "lost confidence" in Prime Minister Starmer's leadership. He noted that remaining in the government under such circumstances would be a "dishonorable and unprincipled step."
The former minister called the results of last week's elections "unprecedented" both in terms of the scale of the defeat and its political consequences. According to him, progressive voters in Great Britain no longer believe as before that the Labour Party can offer hope to the country.
Streeting specifically cited the reduction in the winter fuel allowance and Starmer's "island of strangers" speech in May 2025 among the reasons for the current government's loss of popularity.
He wrote in his letter to the Prime Minister:
"You must listen to your colleagues, including MPs. A harsh approach to differing opinions weakens our policy."
Streeting also stated that it is now clear that Starmer will not lead the Labour Party into the next parliamentary elections, and that it is important for debates about the party's future to be held "with the strongest possible candidates."
The former health minister called his time in office "the greatest pride of his life." He noted that the National Health Service (NHS) is currently "on the road to recovery," but emphasized that there is still much work to be done.
