The Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court's (ICC) "Rome Statute" has decided to remove Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan from office, who is facing sexual harassment allegations.
Modern.az reports, citing foreign media, that this was announced by the President of the Assembly, Paivi Kaukoranta.
According to the information, 82 out of 125 member states participating in the vote voted in favor of Karim Khan's removal from office. This is the first time in the history of the ICC that a sitting chief prosecutor has been removed from office.
An investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Karim Khan began in May 2025. At that time, the ICC announced that he had been sent on administrative leave until the investigation was completed. Later, in August, the British newspaper "The Guardian" wrote that a second accusation of the same nature had been brought against him.
It should be recalled that Russia had previously opened a criminal case against Karim Khan on charges of deliberately prosecuting innocent persons. In 2023, Karim Khan had applied to the ICC for an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.
