Member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) offered the Armenian leadership to hold a referendum and determine the country's future direction at the summit held in May.
Modern.az reports that a Russian official, in a statement, said that Armenia has a choice.
According to him, the Armenian leadership was offered to answer the question “Do you want to join the European Union or remain in the Eurasian Economic Union?” through a referendum.
“I think this is a completely justified request. The norms of one organization do not coincide with the norms of another. This has been discussed many times,” he said.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, however, previously announced that he would make a decision “when the time comes.”
The Russian official also criticized Pashinyan's stance:
“But what does “when the time comes” mean? What if you have adopted a law on starting Armenia's membership in the European Union?”
He also drew attention to Pashinyan's recent statement regarding the referendum. He stated that the Armenian Prime Minister said that the issue of the referendum can only be discussed after the country's application for EU membership is submitted, that application is reacted to, and a “roadmap” for membership is prepared.
“This, I think, shows that there is not much trust in the Armenian voters and the Armenian people,” the Russian official emphasized.
