A referendum will be held in Iceland on August 29.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that during the voting, citizens of the country will express their attitude on whether negotiations on membership in the European Union should be resumed with Brussels.
According to polls conducted on the eve of the vote, only about half of Icelandic citizens support rapprochement between Reykjavik and Brussels. However, a “yes” vote in the referendum to resume negotiations will not mean that Iceland has automatically decided to join the European Union.
The main issue in the vote will not be EU membership, but the resumption of negotiations on membership.
If the majority of voters support the resumption of negotiations, the process itself could last several years. After that, there will be a separate decision-making stage on whether Iceland will join the EU.
