The Royal Palace of Norway has announced the death of King Harald V.
Modern.az reports, citing foreign media, that the news of the King's death has just been officially confirmed.
The King's health had sharply deteriorated in recent days. He had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Oslo since August 17. Initially treated for a blood disorder – hemolytic anemia – the monarch was later diagnosed with a bacterial infection in his blood.
On August 27, the Royal Palace stated that Harald's health was “very serious.” His wife, Queen Sonja, and Crown Prince Haakon canceled all their official engagements to be by the King's side.
Harald V ascended the Norwegian throne on January 17, 1991, after the death of his father, King Olav V. He was one of Europe's longest-reigning monarchs and the world's oldest ruler.
Following the King's death, his son, Crown Prince Haakon, is expected to ascend the Norwegian throne.
