Georgia considers it important to strengthen international cooperation in building safe and inclusive communities, sustainable development of cities and increasing their resilience.
Modern.az reports that these ideas were voiced by the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze at the official opening ceremony of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.
I. Kobakhidze noted that cities play a central role in solving global challenges such as climate resilience, housing security, sustainable development and social solidarity.
“In recent years in Georgia, along with strong economic growth, balanced territorial development and modern urban planning have become one of the main priorities of national policy.
In addition, Georgia is working on a national spatial development concept with the support of international partners. This document is considered an important basis for ensuring balanced and sustainable development in all regions of the country.”
The Prime Minister of Georgia assessed the completion of the national cadastre in Georgia and the full registration of land plots across the country as an important achievement.
“This reform has strengthened land management and created a more transparent basis for economic activity and territorial management.
The well-being of people is at the center of Georgia's urban and housing policy. The country continues to provide housing and social support to persons displaced as a result of war and occupation.”
In his speech, he also said that the protection of traditional Georgian architectural heritage is one of the important directions of urban planning policy:
“Modernization should not be carried out at the expense of losing historical heritage. Georgia is committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda, and is ready to strengthen cooperation with international partners for the development of safe, inclusive and sustainable settlements,” I. Kobakhidze noted.
