The case of former Armenian Foreign Ministry employee Ashkhen Aleksanyan, who was previously accused of treason, will be re-examined in the court of first instance.
Modern.az reports that based on the appeal of the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia, the Court of Appeal for Criminal Cases decided on September 22 to reconsider the case. The court of first instance had previously reclassified the charge of treason to an article related to official powers and sentenced Aleksanyan to two years in prison.
Aleksanyan's defense side objects to the appeal decision. According to the lawyers, it is concerning that a decision on such a serious charge was made in written proceedings, without examining the circumstances of the case in an oral court session.
The defense side stated that it will appeal the decision to the Court of Cassation of Armenia, and if necessary, will also apply to the European Court of Human Rights. Sending the case back for reconsideration does not mean that the guilt on the charge of treason has been proven.
