One of the former leading scientists of Harvard University in the USA - Charles Lieber has been officially appointed as the head of the new "i-BRAIN" institute operating in Shenzhen, China.
Modern.az reports that the scientist will serve as the director of the institute operating in the field of brain-computer interfaces. The main goal of the project is to make China a world leader in this technology.
According to the information, Charles Lieber has gained wider opportunities in China compared to the period when he worked in the USA. It is reported that he was given unlimited conditions for conducting experiments on primates, as well as for using advanced chip production equipment. It is noted that the project is fully financed by the Chinese government.
Experts believe that brain-computer interface technologies can create serious changes in both civilian and military fields in the future. For this reason, some circles are concerned that the technologies developed by Lieber may be used in China's military programs in the future.
It is noted that the Chinese authorities have declared BCI technologies a "national priority". According to analysts, research in this direction can pave the way for the development of military systems integrated with artificial intelligence and technologies that increase human cognitive abilities.
It should be recalled that Charles Lieber was convicted in the USA in 2021 for hiding payments he received from the Chinese government's "Thousand Talents" program. According to the information, the scientist was offered 750,000 dollars a year within the framework of that program. After receiving a light sentence and retiring in 2023, he fully moved to China.
