Six European countries have proposed imposing a special tax on oil companies.
Modern.az reports that AFP has released information on this matter.
The initiative was put forward against the backdrop of a sharp increase in oil prices after the US and Israel started a war against Iran, which led to a rise in company revenues.
According to the publication, the economy and finance ministers of Austria, Germany, Spain, Poland, and Portugal sent this proposal to the finance minister of Ireland, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union (EU). They proposed discussing this issue at the meeting of EU finance ministers to be held in Dublin in September.
The authors of the initiative note that oil companies achieve high profits not only due to the increase in oil prices but also thanks to the rise in revenues from the sale of oil products.
European ministers believe that in the context of serious supply problems and rising living costs, the possibility of collecting additional fees from oil companies should be considered.
However, the publication notes that despite calls from a number of European countries to impose a tax on the extraordinary profits of oil companies, no decision has yet been made at the EU level regarding the implementation of such a fee.
It should be noted that similar measures were also applied in Europe in 2022.
