The aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" has returned to its permanent port in Toulon, but a part of the French Navy continues to remain in the Middle East region.
Modern.az reports that French President Emmanuel Macron shared this on the social network "X".
Macron noted that France had previously sent anti-mine forces to the region – two mine-sweeping vessels, two frigates, and one maritime patrol aircraft. These forces were kept ready for joint operations with partners to ensure maritime security around the Strait of Hormuz and the full restoration of shipping.
The French leader linked the changes in operational deployment to the changing situation in the region and the development of diplomatic processes. He specifically noted the memorandum of understanding signed between the US and Iran on June 17, stating that it was an important step towards regional stability and confirmed the importance of ensuring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Macron also emphasized that the decision was made after consultations with the Sultan of Oman and taking into account existing operational needs.
However, despite the recall of the French aircraft carrier group, anti-mine forces and their escort units remain in the region and are kept ready for joint operations with allies.
The French President added that his country will continue to closely monitor the situation in the region and will readjust its military presence as necessary, in accordance with security conditions.
