The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced that it is looking for four volunteer astronauts for its Moon and Mars simulation program in preparation for future deep space missions.
Modern.az reports with reference to Iqtisadiyyat.az that during the 12-month program, which will start at the Johnson Space Center in Houston at the earliest in August 2027, participants will live in complete isolation in an artificial base.
It was stated that the simulation will reflect space travel and living conditions on the surface of Mars, and volunteers will live in a limited area, grow food, monitor their health and perform spacewalk exercises. One of the main goals of the project is to improve human performance and minimize risks during long-term space missions.
Within the framework of the program, the adaptation of the participants to Mars' time regime, which is approximately 40 minutes longer than Earth's day, will also be investigated.
Applicants are required to be between 30 and 55 years old, a US citizen or permanent resident, and have a higher education in engineering or natural sciences. In addition, candidates must successfully pass physical and psychological tests, and must not have a history of sleepwalking or using sleeping pills.
