In Georgia, the Azerbaijani language has become the second most used mother tongue.
Modern.az reports that this was noted in the results of the 2024 population census of the National Statistics Office of Georgia.
According to the information, 6.8 percent of the Georgian population's mother tongue is Azerbaijani. This means that approximately one out of every 14 people considers Azerbaijani their mother tongue.
265,534 people in the country indicated Azerbaijani as their mother tongue.
Azerbaijani is second only to Georgian in terms of mother tongue. Georgian is the mother tongue of 85.1 percent of the population. The number of people who indicated this language as their mother tongue is 3 million 343 thousand 987 people.
Official Georgian statistics also show that the position of the Azerbaijani language has strengthened in the last decade. Thus, compared to the 2014 census, the number of people who indicated Azerbaijani as their mother tongue increased by approximately 15 percent.
