The death toll from the devastating floods on the Nepal-China border continues to rise.
Modern.az reports that, citing Nepal's Disaster Management Agency, at least 669 people have died in the country.
According to the latest information, another 2,426 people are considered missing in Nepal, and more than 3,700 people have been rescued. Seven people have also died in China's Tibet region, and 554 people are unaccounted for. Thus, a total of 676 people have lost their lives in both countries as a result of the disaster.
On August 26, a mass of water, ice, rock, and mud caused by a glacier collapse inundated settlements along mountain rivers. The floods destroyed buildings, bridges, roads, and power stations. Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts are among the most affected areas.
Adverse weather conditions, high mountains, and narrow gorges complicate search and rescue operations. More than 100 people are believed to be trapped in a mud-filled tunnel at the construction site of the “Upper Trishuli-1” Hydropower Plant.
Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal stated that finding the missing is the country's top priority. Kathmandu has requested technical assistance from foreign countries for rescue operations in tunnels, locating people, identifying bodies, and conducting DNA analyses.
