An investigation has reportedly been launched in Hungary into the country's former foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto.

Modern.az reports, citing foreign media, that the country's Prime Minister Peter Magyar made a statement about this.

According to him, the investigation has already begun, but detailed information about the progress of the investigation is not being disclosed.

"As far as I know, an investigation has been launched. When information that can be shared with the public emerges, we will do so," the prime minister said.

Magyar noted that confidential documents, materials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other information related to the case are being investigated.

The issue came back to the agenda after news that Peter Szijjarto left parliament to take a position at China's BYD company. According to local media, he will be responsible for foreign relations and the development of new business directions at the company.

This appointment has sparked discussions in Hungary about a conflict of interest, as the government had previously provided significant support to BYD.

The reason for the launch of the investigation is cited as an article published in the US newspaper "The Washington Post." The publication claimed that Szijjarto continued his close contacts with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov even after the start of the war in Ukraine and passed on information about discussions held during European Union meetings.

It should be noted that Peter Szijjarto has been one of Azerbaijan's closest partners in Europe, having visited Baku numerous times as Hungary's foreign minister. He has made more than 10 visits to our country and played an active role in the development of strategic partnership between the two countries.
