Gunmen have abducted 23 children from the "Dahallukitab School Group" orphanage in Kogi State, southern central Nigeria.

Modern.az reports that approximately 15 children have been rescued, while eight are still considered missing. Authorities reported this on Monday.

Mass kidnappings regularly occur in Nigeria. These incidents are usually carried out by criminal gangs who demand ransom and target vulnerable groups in insecure rural areas.

According to Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi State Commissioner for Information, the wife of the orphanage director was also abducted.

"Intensive operations are underway to free the remaining eight victims and apprehend the perpetrators," the statement added.
