The real financial scale of the Starship mega-rocket project, developed by the US space company "SpaceX", has been revealed for the first time.
Modern.az reports, citing Reuters' information based on the company's IPO documents, that "SpaceX" has already spent more than 15 billion dollars on this project.
This figure is not only a technical development cost, but also one of the most critical investments that form the basis of the company's future value. Looking at SpaceX's overall financial performance, an interesting trend emerges. The company's capital expenditures sharply increased in 2025, reaching 20.7 billion dollars. A large part of this was directed to artificial intelligence projects. For this reason, while the company made a profit in 2024, it ended 2025 with a loss of 4.94 billion dollars.
Nevertheless, Starlink internet service, which is SpaceX's main source of income, continues to generate strong financial flow. In 2025, Starlink brought in 11.4 billion dollars in revenue and 4.4 billion dollars in operating profit. The company's main strategic goal is to make access to space as common as "airlines" through Starship. Elon Musk has long wanted to build a model where rocket launches can be carried out daily or hourly. This should lead to a sharp reduction in costs.
Currently, sending 1 kilogram of cargo into orbit with the "Falcon 9" rocket costs approximately 2700-3000 dollars. The goal for Starship is to reduce this figure to the range of 10-100 dollars. This means a reduction of 30 to 300 times. However, the realization of this plan depends on one condition: the Starship rocket being able to fly hundreds of times with the same p. If this is not possible, the entire economic model is at risk.
