The Spanish Ministry of Health announced that a Spanish citizen, who was quarantined after being evacuated from the cruise ship "MV Hondius", tested positive for hantavirus.

On the evening of May 11, the ship "MV Hondius" departed from Tenerife, Canary Islands, for the Netherlands. On May 22, WHO reported 12 hantavirus patients on board. Three people died from the disease, and one patient was hospitalized in Johannesburg.
