Hungary's new prime minister, Peter Magyar, stated that official relations with Ukraine are only possible after the recognition of the Hungarian language in that country.
Modern.az reports that Peter Magyar said:
“The most important thing for us is to get guarantees that the approximately 100,000 Hungarians living in Ukraine will be able to use their mother tongue again in schools, in culture, and in government within 10-15 years. We have an 11-point proposal that is not new to the Ukrainian side. This mainly concerns educational, cultural, and linguistic rights.
We expect the Ukrainian side to implement these points. This is not a special demand. In Europe and elsewhere, this is a fundamental human right: wherever a person lives, even as a minority, they should be able to use their mother tongue.
After this, I think an official meeting between the foreign ministers of Hungary and Ukraine will be possible.”
