Cape Verde goalkeeper makes history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

According to Sports.kz, citing statistics from Opta, Cape Verde's 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha has achieved a historic milestone at the FIFA World Cup.

The veteran shot-stopper recorded 18 saves throughout the tournament, including eight in Cape Verde's dramatic 3-2 Round of 32 defeat to Argentina.

With this performance, Vozinha became one of the oldest goalkeepers in FIFA World Cup history to register the highest number of saves in a single tournament.

Only two goalkeepers aged 40 or older have made more saves at a single World Cup: former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who recorded 28 saves at the 1990 World Cup, and Italian legend Dino Zoff, who made 27 saves at the 1982 tournament.

Although Cape Verde was eliminated after a 3-2 loss to Argentina, Vozinha's outstanding performance has been widely regarded as one of the most memorable displays of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
