More than 54 percent of the total water resources formed in Azerbaijan in 2024 fell to the share of transboundary waters.
This was reported to Modern.az in response to its inquiry by the State Service for Control over the Use and Protection of Waters under the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan.
It was stated that, according to the annual water management balance approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, the volume of total water resources formed in the country amounted to 30.3 cubic kilometers.
According to the information, 8.4 cubic kilometers of this falls to groundwater, and 21.9 cubic kilometers to surface water. 16.4 cubic kilometers of surface water resources are formed at the expense of transboundary waters.
The agency noted that the forecasting of water resources is currently carried out based on existing scenarios. However, this approach may not always be sufficient for making accurate decisions.
"In recent years, the prolongation of drought periods as a result of climate change, the fall of precipitation with intensity not corresponding to the season, as well as the uneven distribution of precipitation over time and space, necessitate the preparation of more accurate climate forecasts related to water resources. For the preparation of reliable forecasts, long-term observations and extensive analysis of data from recent years are considered important," the official statement emphasized.
For information, at the last press conference dedicated to the implementation of the instructions of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and issues arising from the State Program for 2026-2030, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Zaur Aliyev announced that Azerbaijan could be among the 35 countries most affected by water scarcity by 2050.
