Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that he does not currently see the need to hold a referendum on the country's continued membership in the European Union or the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Modern.az reports that Pashinyan spoke about this in Yerevan after the election campaign, in a statement to journalists.

He noted that such a referendum can only be held if an objective necessity arises:

“Currently, we do not plan to put this to a referendum. Such a step will be taken when an objective need arises.”

Pashinyan emphasized that the issue is not a matter of political preference, but a matter of transformation. At the same time, he said that Armenia does not intend to leave the EAEU for now.

The Armenian Prime Minister also stated that it is not correct to compare interstate relations with personal relations:

“Interstate relations should not be confused with family relations. There is a completely different logic here.”

Pashinyan added that Armenia respects both the EAEU members and its participation in the organization, and Yerevan has no intention of spoiling relations with Russia.

He noted that he had numerous business discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and even the most acute issues were resolved calmly.
