Discussions have intensified in Europe on a contingency plan to ensure security in the event of a possible US withdrawal from NATO.
Modern.az reports that "The Wall Street Journal" published information on this, citing several sources.
It was stated that the purpose of the prepared plan is to ensure that the European Union can defend itself using NATO's existing military structures. According to the information, some officials working on this initiative unofficially call the project “European NATO.” They seek to have more Europeans represented in command and staff positions within the alliance, and also aim to complement US military capabilities with the resources of European countries.
According to sources, these plans are mainly advanced within the framework of informal discussions, including closed meetings and business lunches, and are not intended to create a rival structure to the existing NATO alliance.
It is noted that one of the main reasons for the activation of discussions is the change in Germany's position. Previously, Berlin opposed the idea of a more independent European defense policy promoted by France and preferred to maintain the US's role as a security guarantor. However, during the period of Friedrich Merz, who became chancellor in May 2025, doubts began to arise in Germany about the reliability of the US as an ally.
