Statistical figures regarding cities and regions where victims of human trafficking are exploited do not seem convincing.
Modern.az reports that this was stated by MP Nagif Hamzayev during the discussion of the annual report of the National Coordinator for Combating Human Trafficking at today's meeting of the Milli Majlis Human Rights and Legal Policy and State Building Committee.
The deputy stated that showing one or two facts for some regions in the report may not fully reflect the reality:
“Perhaps there are many, but they have simply not been registered as such a crime or there is no direct appeal.”
N. Hamzayev drew attention to the statistics, especially regarding Ganja, and noted that showing only two cases for the city does not seem convincing to him:
“If this is truly the case, we should be happy about it. But at the beginning of the report, it is stated that there are millions of victims worldwide, and suddenly the numbers seem very low,” he emphasized.
The deputy also raised the problem of minors working in restaurants and cafes:
“We encounter cases where minors work as waiters in cafes and restaurants; the financial hardship of some families forces children to work. Sometimes when you investigate, you see that there is no man in the family, only a woman. This child is forced to help his mother.”
Nagif Hamzayev emphasized that the State Labor Inspectorate bears great responsibility in this matter and noted the importance of coordinated activity with relevant institutions. He stated that the involvement of children under 16 in labor should be prevented.
The deputy added that such cases are frequently encountered in both Baku and Ganja:
“Sometimes we see children hiding their age. Frankly, we don't know what to do. We try to prevent this whenever we can.”
